Chers membres de la communauté de l’Université d’Ottawa,
Aujourd’hui, j’ai le plaisir d’annoncer la nomination du tout premier conseiller spécial, antiracisme et inclusion, soit le professeur Boulou Ebanda de B’béri.
La nomination du professeur de B’béri fait suite à l’annonce la semaine dernière par le recteur Jacques Frémont de la création d’un nouveau Comité d’action antiracisme et inclusion. Ce nouveau poste ainsi que cette nomination sont d’autres étapes concrètes que l’Université prend pour lutter contre le racisme et faire de notre campus un environnement accueillant pour tous les membres de notre communauté.
Le professeur de B’béri coprésidera le Comité d’action antiracisme et inclusion et travaillera en étroite collaboration avec les facultés et les services pour mettre en œuvre les recommandations du comité. Son mandat sera d’une durée d’un an.
Le travail du Comité d’action est essentiel pour favoriser l’inclusion des membres appartenant aux communautés noires, autochtones et racisées et éliminer les obstacles à nos efforts de diversité et d’inclusion. Un appel de candidatures pour les membres du Comité est en cours et nous encourageons nos étudiants, nos professeurs et notre personnel à soumettre la candidature de celles ou ceux qui sont les mieux placés pour faire avancer notre communauté.
Le professeur de B’béri est professeur titulaire en communication à la Faculté des arts, où ses recherches portent sur les pratiques de formation identitaire dans les nations multiculturelles, les études culturelles et la mémoire culturelle. Il mène actuellement des recherches sur la presse noire canadienne du 19e siècle et ses connexions avec le monde transatlantique.
Nous voulons tous aborder ces problèmes rapidement et efficacement. Je suis convaincue que l’expérience, l’expertise et le leadership du professeur de B’béri aideront à faire en sorte que l’Université évolue rapidement pour devenir un campus plus inclusif, diversifié et accueillant.

Dear members of the uOttawa community,
Today I am delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Boulou Ebanda de B’béri as the University’s first Special Advisor on Anti-Racism and Inclusion.
Professor de B’béri’s appointment follows the announcement last week by President Frémont of a new Action Committee on Anti-Racism and Inclusion. The creation of this new role and Professor de B’béri’s appointment is another concrete step the University is taking to address racism and ensure our campus is a welcoming environment for all members of our community.
Professor de B’béri will co-chair the Action Committee on Anti-Racism and Inclusion and work closely with faculties, services and all student bodies to implement the Committee’s recommendations. His appointment is for a one-year term.
The Action Committee’s work is vital to furthering the inclusion of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) members of the University community and eliminating barriers to our diversity and inclusion efforts. A call for nominations for members of the Committee is underway and we encourage our students, faculty, and staff to nominate those who are best suited to move our community forward.
Professor de B’béri is a Full Professor in Communication at the Faculty of Arts, where his research focuses on practices of identity formation in multi-cultural nations, cultural history and cultural memory. His current insight-research focuses on 19th century Canadian Black Press and its connection with the transatlantic world.
We all want to address these issues swiftly and effectively. I am confident that Professor de B’béri’s experience, expertise and leadership will help to ensure the University moves rapidly to become a more inclusive, diverse and welcoming campus.

His research has focussed on the Canadian ‘historical amnesia’ vis-à-vis the contribution of 19th-century black settlers in Chatham-Kent (ON) and beyond and now he is working on the 19th century Canadian Black Press.
